    The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and NYU Langone Health have joined forces to provide gastroenterology fellows in training with an online Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Clinical Case Simulation Video Library.

    Originally developed as part of the Foundation’s Visiting IBD (VIBD) Fellowship Program due to COVID restrictions, this library features an introduction video, followed by 10 videos that feature clinical scenario simulations of leading IBD experts with patients (played by actors), to provide a virtual clinical educational opportunity across the gamut of IBD care for gastroenterology fellows.

    Within each video is a physician-patient clinical case simulation (about 15 minutes), followed by a short review of clinical and professional teaching points by  teaching faculty from the Foundation’s Professional Education Committee (about 5 minutes).  Please be sure to view the Library videos in order (videos 1-11), and to review the learning objectives (below) for the simulation training before starting the video.

    Video 7 -- focused on perianal fistulizing Crohn’s disease – is taught by Bincy Abraham, MD, MS, who leads the clinical visit simulation and Lisa B. Malter, MD, who provides the debrief and teaching points after the simulation. If you have not yet viewed Video 1, the introduction to this video series, please watch it here before proceeding to watch videos 2 -11 in order.

      Learning Objectives:

      1. Understand what perianal Crohn’s disease is and the complexity of perianal fistulae and abscess, prognosis, and the need to treat this aggressively
      2. Convey the diagnostic testing / procedures utilized to assess perianal Crohn’s disease
      3. Understand what can happen if perianal disease goes untreated and its complications
      4. Communicate effectively the risks and benefits of medical treatments and the pitfalls of long-term corticosteroid use
      5. Assess barriers to understanding risk
      6. Practice shared decision-making
