    Michael Kappelman is trained in pediatric gastroenterology, clinical epidemiology, and health services research. His primary research interests include studies of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. This includes patient centered outcomes research and comparative effectiveness (CER) and safety research, as well as studies of the epidemiology, costs, and utilization of resources by children and adults with IBD. He has experience in both observational and interventional study designs, and has received research funding from the NIH, AHRQ, PCORI, foundations, and industry. He currently serves as the PI for the PCORI-funded IBD Partners Patient Powered Research Network. He is also the PI for two PCORI-funded CER studies, including a PaCR award and a large pragmatic trial in pediatric Crohn’s disease. He co-directs the Community and Stakeholder Engagement core of the UNC Clinical and Translational Science Award program Dr. Kappelman is a pediatric gastroenterologist with an active research program in IBD, comparative effectiveness research, health outcomes and epidemiology. He has collaborated with a large number of CGIBD members, and has played an important role in mentoring trainees in digestive disease epidemiology.
